Black Girl Magic: Kristin Sutton

It was an early morning in October when I walked into the Mint Conference. I was slated to do a food photography workshop (I might blog about my food photography at a later date). I sat down and introduced myself to the people around me. Some of them I knew from Instagram. I saw Kristin and was captivated by how drop dead gorgeous she was. Skin just as flawless!! (I thought she had on foundation, but nope, her skin is really that flawless). Now, I had been following Kristin aka @debtfreeblkgrl for some time now, but we had never met in person. I decided to shoot my shot (no pun intended) and told her I must photograph her to which she simply said ok. I followed up after the conference and the rest was history. Stay tuned for the magic that was created.

 I mean....just gorgeous!

I mean....just gorgeous!

Now, don't be fooled, Kristin is not just a beautiful face. She is an intellectual brown girl who, in her young life, started the journey to becoming debt free. So many adults, including myself, are struggling with debt. Now she shares her knowledge of financial planning, budgeting and overcoming debt with the world and does it in a way that is relatable and easy to understand.

Her story: "I started dfbg as a platform to document my journey to becoming a debt free black girl and encouraging others to do the same. After I moved back from Atlanta and started to change the way I thought (after ducking and dodging my debt) I got serious and was able to knock out $10K of debt on a limited income in about 9 months or so. Which was a major thing for me considering I was barely paying anything before, not even the minimum. The name God gave me, Debt Free Back Girl is an affirmation."

Get you some of the wisdom she is dropping. Check her out here.

Now, let's get into her style. It's uniquely hers. She is both girly and tomboy at the same time and makes thrifted pieces look like a million bucks! She is definitely a woman who owns her unique style and marches to the beat of her own drum. When we set the date for the shoot, I gave Kristin full creative liberties with her look because I loved her style and let me tell you, it was perfection. Here's why.  I chose Union Market, DC as my shoot location because of a mural that was up at the time. Kristin had no idea about the mural but manged to curate a look that worked PERFECTLY! It was  just meant to be. The resulting images were flawless. This is by far, one of my favorite shoots of 2017.

We were even blessed to have a few of the images published!! 3 images were featured in the inaugural issue of The Femme Fatale DC's Photobook.

Kristin, you are amazing and the epitome of #BlackGirlMagic! You have such a pleasant spirit, a fun, carefree demeanor and are so down to earth. It was an absolute pleasure working with you. Thank you so much for indulging my creative whim!

Until next time, lovelies

XOXO,

-Melena
